This post is triggered by a comment I made about needing to be more specific about the use of “AI”: one of my LI members said I was looking for a “cookbook or recipe” …
My response:
No, I am not looking for a “cookbook or recipe”.

I am looking for people to realize that:
- throwing around the term “AI” makes it seem that they believe it is one technology;
- the timing, use, and deployment of any AI Technology application is entirely up to the management of each company;
- “AI” is not a magic solution for any company, regardless of whatever AI technology applications are used;
- whatever benefits are generated by deploying any AI Technology application must be focused on meeting business objectives, and by that I mean meeting or exceeding customer objectives.
Nope, another “shiny toy” hits the market and every enterprise must now use it.
The myopia around “AI” (which is not one technology but an expanding portfolio of technologies each with its own expanding set of applications) is worse.
None of the people glibly offering advice that starts and ends with enterprises should use “AI” seem to consider that each enterprise must consider:
- Which AI Technologies and concomitant applications to use;
- The skills and resources the enterprise needs to actually use whichever AI Technologies and concomitant applications to use;
- Which existing business systems / customer-facing systems / financial systems will be impacted and how;
- The fact that enterprises must estimate what the financial pluses and minuses are of using the AI Technologies and concomitant applications they choose to use;
- How regulators of the company’s industry or government regulators will be involved; and actually most importantly,
- Whether their current and targeted clients actually want to conduct commerce with the enterprise’s chosen AI Technology applications.
The heck with it. No logical or reasoned approach required. Just use “AI” … and, of course, use “quantum”.
Well said. The world is awash with AIism. Reminds me of knowledge management. Consulting firms and marketers glom on to such terms and destroy their meaning. Such is life. But it requires posts like yours to remind us of truths. lpc
